Picodeon Ltd Oy launches a New R&D facility

With new lab, Picodeon expands its development of cost-efficient and environmentally friendly methods for depositing metals, ceramics, polymers and their composites

Picodeon Ltd Oy, a leading developer and provider of ultra-thin film and nanocoating technologies based on ultra-short laser pulses, opens a new R&D facility in Kuopio, Finland.

The new facility allows Picodeon to accelerate the development of its cutting-edge laser deposition technologies, which provide its customers a wider range of materials, superior adhesion, and high-quality functional surfaces for applications such as wear-resistance, non-stick coating, electrical conductivity etc. These methods ensure a cost-effective production with an environmentally-friendly process, as the use of harmful chemicals can be reduced or even eliminated, and energy consumption lowered.

The new Kuopio facility focuses on developing new methods for depositing metals, ceramics, polymers and their composites on a wide range of materials, such as plastic, stone, glass, metal or even organic surfaces, such as paper or fabric.

“Our new facility gives our R&D team more means to further develop our patented technology for special applications. At the new R&D facility we can coat several materials that until now have been beyond the range of physical vapor deposition. In addition to metals, we can coat also new materials, such as plastic, stone or paper” says Picodeon’s Chief Scientific Officer, Professor Reijo Lappalainen.

“Picodeon has made major investments in R&D. We already have a portfolio of over 40 patent applications, and with our new R&D facility we will be at the cutting edge of this rapidly developing field” says Dr. Vesa Myllymäki, Picodeon’s VP for IPR and Strategy. “In addition, we can now deposit even metals, ceramics, polymers and their composites, which further strengthens our IPR portfolio”, continues Dr. Myllymäki.
